Better DecisionsHelping Resource Managers Make Better Decisions The SituationResource managers and policy makers in the Caribbean are responsible for assessing fisheries and designing, maintaining and assessing coral reef Marine Protected Areas. To make the best decisions, they need the best information and effective training. The GoalThe goal of the Perry Institute for Marine Science was to provide these officials with extensive training, and to act as a clearinghouse for the scientific data they need to make the best decisions when assessing fisheries and designing Marine Protected Areas. The ApproachThe Perry Institute for Marine Science hosts workshops at Lee Stocking Island for resource managers and policy makers. We invite them to learn firsthand the science behind Marine Protected Areas, and to learn the skills necessary to assess and design these areas. The ResultWe've created several training programs on habitat and fish assessment on coral reefs. We've also conducted research cruises with five Caribbean countries that allow our scientists to work directly with resource managers from these nations. |
